Instead of my traditional Friday Five, I am doing a book review and giveaway today! Over Spring Break, I had the pleasure to read Trials and Trails by Jim Halverson.
Overall, I really enjoyed this book. It appeals to fans of old western movies or to those who really wish they could ride the range. It tells the stories of an unlikely pair as they navigate the west in Postbellum America. LeRoy has a past of slavery and compliance and knows how to pick his battles, while his unexpected partner Johnny B, a quick-tempered Sioux, is still learning to control his anger. These two men find themselves saving lives, reuniting old friends, helping their elders and finding the worth of themselves along the way. A reminder that everyone has value, the true purpose in the book rings loud and clear
As with any good story, there are a few surprises along the way and I can honestly say that I finished the book in less than 2 days because I was sucked into it. I found this book to be an easy read. It is well written and historically accurate. I never pass up a quality historical fiction novel and this one is well worth a read! As someone who grew up around horses and spending time outside, I always enjoy books that awaken that nostalgia for me.
