How I Forced Myself to be a Morning Person

Good morning friends! Mornings are the topic this morning. (Let's see how many times can I use the word morning in this paragraph...). I have always been a night owl. When in doubt, I stay up late and get up late.... it's just the way I am wired I guess. However, this semester, my schedule has forced me to adjust my habits. I have night class 4 days a week and morning classes 3 of the days. My night owl tendencies would leave me with zero sleep if I continued to follow them. Therefore, I made a 2018 resolution to become a better morning person. So far, it's going pretty well.

As much as I hate waking up in the morning, I love how productive it makes me feel. I get so much more accomplished. This is a good habit to set now because it will serve me much better in the professional world... there are also studies about how the most successful people are morning people. Let's hope they are right... Without further ado, here are my tips on forcing yourself to become more of a morning person.

1. Go to Bed Earlier
Yes, this is a no-brainer. However, it is also the first step to being a better morning person. I have always been a night owl. That is when I am naturally most productive. However, the older I get, the more I have realized that being a morning person is a great habit. With my schedule this semester, it pretty much forced my hand. I had to be productive in the mornings because my evenings are filled with night classes and if I saved all my homework for after my night class, I would never get to see my husband during the week. I have slowly worked my bedtime to be earlier and earlier. I start winding down around 9:45 and I make lunches for the next day, lay out my clothes, take the dogs out, do my nightly makeup routine and settle into bed. I have found that my humidifier with a few drops of a soothing essential oil really helps me to wind down. I usually read a few chapters of a novel on my kindle ( I avoid my phone because the blue light will keep you awake) before my eyes grow heavy and I am usually asleep between 10:30 and 11:00. This means that when my 7am wakeup comes, I have gotten a full 8 hours of sleep at least.

2. Have Breakfast Prepped
I hate cooking breakfast when I first wake up. When in doubt I just skip it which is really unhealthy or eat something really unhealthy like sugary cereal. I have found that having breakfast prepped and ready to go helps me to get up and get a good breakfast even though it's early. My favorite thing to do is to make a huge batch of steel cut oatmeal in the crockpot on Sunday and portion it into daily breakfast sizes. Then in the morning, I just heat up my portioned oatmeal and a hearty, healthy breakfast is ready to go in just a few minutes.

3. Workout First Thing
Ahh workouts. I have a very love/hate relationship with working out. I have been doing better in 2018... the treadmill in my basement has been a gamechanger. I have been making a point to wake up 30 minutes earlier so I can knock out a run before my day really gets started. It helps me to wake up and get moving. I also feel so productive and positive if I start my day off with a work out- I feel so accomplished! Hopefully, I can keep it up and fulfill my goal of running a 5K in 2018! Some mornings I don't feel like running and I will do a short Yoga session instead. Either way, getting a workout in first thing has been a great way to start off my mornings and make my mornings easier.

4. Save Some Reading for the Morning
So this may seem like a weird tip but it has been working for me. I save a little bit of my reading for the morning before my classes. While this seems "last minute" it basically forces me to get up early because I know I HAVE to finish my reading (and I am terrified of going into class unprepared so it is a great reinforcement of getting out of bed and hitting the books). It also serves as a great little review before my class so the information is fresh in my mind.

5. Plan Things for Morning Whenever Possible
In the same vein as saving some of my reading for the morning, I plan meetings or appointments in the morning whenever possible. This forces me out of bed first thing and then I have the rest of my day after that engagement is completed. This keeps me from falling into the temptation of staying in my cozy warm bed because I have nowhere to go. I am not a natural morning person so I tend to have to trick/force myself into being better at it.

I am still working on being a better morning person but these things have certainly helped me improve!!

June Favorites

I can't believe June is almost over! This summer is flying. I am almost finished with my internship, our vacation is coming up very soon and I just had to order my casebooks for fall semester... But I am making the most of the summer while it lasts! Below I have outlined a few of my favorite things from through this June.

1. Lemon Water in the AM
I started putting a few lemon slices in my water- game changer! Not only does my water taste better and I drink more of it, lemon is SO good for you. It aids in digestion, it provides vitamin C, it helps the body to produce collagen which makes for clear and radiant skin and it helps you to lose weight thanks to the pectin in the lemons. I also feel that it gives me great all day energy. I have been loving it! Also, this makes me so basic but lemons in water just look so pretty in a cute mason jar glass.
2. Planet Fitness Membership
My husband and I recently got a Planet Fitness membership and I have finally been getting back into a workout groove. I have been utilizing a "couch to 5K" app on my phone to aid in my workouts as well as the PF 12 Minute Abs each time. I have been sore but it is a good sore. I love feeling my body get back in shape and knowing that I am improving.

3. Book Review: Everyone Brave is Forgiven by Chris Cleave
I have been reading this on and off throughout the month. It is a historical fiction novel set in World War II London. It follows four young people throughout their war experience. I thoroughly enjoyed the book. It is a little slow to start but it gets good after that. It is a lovely account of a fascinating time in history.

4. Caribou Iced Coffee
I loveeeee me some coffee. Like Lorelai Gilmore style, just give me an IV. However, in the summer heat, sometimes I just can't do the hot drink. I love iced coffee but it is so hard to make at home and I am too cheap to stop and buy it every day. I came across Caribou Iced Coffee at the grocery and I am obsessed! It comes ready made, cream and sugar added and the price is super fair. I just pour it over some ice and go on my merry way, iced nectar of the gods in hand.

5. Podcast- Sworn
I am late to the world of Podcasts but I am obsessed. I have been listening on my way to and from work. I most recently listened to Sworn- an examination of the Lake Oconee Murders of Russell and Shirley Dermond. The victims were both in their 80's and he was beheaded (the head has never been found) and she was found in a nearby lake weighed down with concrete blocks. The murders happened in 2014 and yet remain unsolved. Who would kill a couple in their 80's, known to be active in their church and well liked by all? and why?

6. The Great British Baking Show
I am not sure why I just now found this on Netflix but I am obsessed. First, I adore British people. The accent, the phrases, and the food also looks amazing. Second, Mary Berry is just fantastic. Third, it makes me want to bake, bake, bake all day and my husband has been loving all the baked goods floating around the house as a result. If you haven't watched this show, you should. It is a gem.

I hope everyone has a wonderful holiday weekend full of family, friends, and America!

Why I Changed to Natural Cleaning Products

Who else actually loves cleaning?? Like I am talking Monica Geller style love of cleaning. Everything thinks I am crazy but nothing is more therapeutic or fulfilling to me than some good ole' fashion scrubbing and a nice clean house. My mom instilled a desire for cleanliness in me from a young age and I have always been a crazy clean freak.

Given that, I am always on the search for new and better cleaning products. Lately, I have been searching to make my cleaning products more natural and less harmful. After trying many products that simply do not work, I stumbled upon the Mrs. Meyers brand cleaning products. Game changer!

Once discovering these products, I began the search for the best deal on them because I am ever the bargain shopper... something else I learned from my momma. Enter the Grove Collaborative. Not only do they offer a huge range of natural products; they offer great prices, tons of deals and even auto shipments so your monthly cleaning supplies show up on your doorstep without even having to think about it!! It is fantastic anyone like me that like to clean often and uses things up quickly.

I am sharing my first shipment with you as well as my thoughts after using the items for a few weeks now.

Cleaning Supplies

Mrs. Meyers Hand Soap (Bluebell scent)
Oh this hand soap... fantastic. Very bubbly, smells fantastic and leaves your hands clean and soft. I am obsessed.

Mrs. Meyers Dish Soap (Lemon Verbena scent)
This is so great. It cleans the dishes SO well, smells great and I know that it is a natural product on the items I eat off. I always hated the idea of any residue that was harmful left on our eating utensils and with this, I do not have to worry.

Mrs. Meyers Multi-Surface Cleaner (Basil scent)
The basil scent may be my favorite. I have been using this cleaner all over my kitchen literally every day. Counters, stove top, stainless steel... I use it everywhere for a good, natural clean.

Method Anti-bac Bathroom Cleaner
This is not Mrs. Meyers but I gave it a shot anyway. I am so happy with it in my bathrooms! SO clean! and that spearmint smell is fantastic! Getting bacteria out of a bathroom without harsh chemicals is not easy but this cleaner does it.

Extras

Bubble Up Dish Brush Set
This little thing... omg. You just drop some soap into the bowl, add some warm water, push the brush down inside a few times and scrub-a-dub-dub- clean dishes! This was included in my first order for free so win-win!

Mrs. Meyers Candle (Geranium scent)
This candle smells SO good and is lasting forever! Solid candle purchase for sure.

Bobble water bottle
I absolutely love these!! I can have filtered water anywhere! Also, super eco-friendly. Another win-win.

Glass Spray Bottle
This was another freebie... so far I have not decided what to use it for but it is always good to have an extra spray bottle laying around.

I am placing another order in a few weeks with a few repeats and a few new things to try. I have been so happy with everything I purchased as well as the fast shipping and excellent service. If you want to place your own order, use this link to get $10 off your first order!!

Happy natural cleaning!

An Easy Diet for a Young Professional

I will preface by saying I am dieting merely out of a personal effort to be a little more healthy and to eat less junk food in the wake of final exams where I ate like crap. It is not a lose weight diet but merely a more regimented way to stay on a healthy eating plan. Bikini season is just around the corner so this healthy diet will be paired with some exercise and hopefully, all that winter flab and finals week pizza will be gone.

I have always been a healthy person blessed with a high metabolism. I have always been very active, growing up on a farm with endless work to do and riding horses daily my entire life. My family ate pretty healthily and I have never been one with a huge appetite so I have always been thin and trim and had zero concerns about my body. After starting law school and moving to a new city with only a small yard to work in and no horses to ride, suddenly all of my physical activity was cut out of my life and I spent all my time hunched over books or sitting in classrooms. Though I still ate healthily, took the stairs and did Yoga when time allowed, I could definitely tell a negative difference in my body and my overall fitness.

Now that school has ended for the year and the weather has gotten better, I have made a vow to get my fitness back under control. Besides the gym membership I will be purchasing in the next few days, I know a healthy diet is the best basis for a healthy body. I have done some research and devised an eating plan that will be simple enough to stick to as I start my internship and could work for most busy young professionals looking to trim up a bit and feel better about what they are putting in their body without breaking the bank or giving up enjoying food.

Breakfast
I will start my days with a whole bunch of coffee (non-negotiable) and one of a few varieties of filling, yummy and healthy breakfasts. I also take a variety of vitamins every morning including: Biotin, Magnesium, Vitamin D, Calcium, B12 and Vitamin E.

  • Oatmeal with Fruit
  • Whole Wheat Toast with Peanut Butter
  • A Fruit Smoothie
  • Egg Sandwich (1 egg, 1 slice of cheese on an English muffin)

Lunch
I will be packing lunches to take to my internship so they need to be portable and easy enough to eat at the office. My lunches will include carrots and ranch, low-fat vanilla yogurt, whole wheat crackers and a variety of entrees. (oh and a cookie because I have the worlds biggest sweet tooth)
  • Leftovers from previous dinners
  • Baby Spinach Salad
  • Turkey Sandwich on Whole Wheat Bread

Dinner
My husband is on a Gluten Free diet per doctor's orders so most of our dinners are Gluten Free. Because of this, they are all homemade and relatively healthy. I have a variety of go-to recipes and I am always looking for more. Here are a few of my favorites:
  • Lasanaga
  • Shredded Chicken Sandwiches
  • Chicken and Rice Casserole
  • Mongolian Beef Stirfry
  • Shepherds Pie
  • Grilled Chicken with a Vegetable side

Dessert
Did I mention my sweet tooth? It's rather persistent so I will need some sort of dessert in my life that still operates within the general realm of "not too unhealthy".
  • Cookies made with applesauce in place of butter
  • Chocolate covered blueberries
  • Dove Dark Chocolate Squares
  • Chocolate Pudding

Snacks
I am a bit of a grazer so I always have to have some snacks available. This is usually how I end up eating junk so I am trying to be proactive and have some healthy snacks available. My goal is to limit to 2-3 snack breaks per day but we will see how that goes....
  • Crackers and Laughing Cow Cheese
  • Carrots
  • Celery
  • Apples and Peanut butter
  • Fruit Smoothies
  • Yogurt
  • Granola bars
  • Trail Mix (nuts, cheerios, m&m's and raisins)

Well, friends, we will see how this diet fairs... fingers crossed my willpower is strong!

How to Stay Healthy in Law School

Law School throws everything for a loop... and I mean everything. Biggest thing that has been lacking since I started Law School: my health. With my erratic schedule (stay up until midnight, up at 5:30 during the week, sleep until 10 on weekends), making a point to eat healthy, drink enough water and maybe sneak a workout in is a struggle. I have made a resolution to really get things under control this new year and now as I am in my 5th month since starting Law School, I have finally figured out a plan that is a bit more healthy. Here are my tips for staying healthy in Law School.
