How to Combat Senioritis

3 weeks.
2 presentations.
4 papers.
3 final exams.

That is all that stands between me and graduation from my undergraduate institution. Senioritis is at an all time high... I am just ready to graduate, get married, buy a house and start Law School. Finding the gumption to get my work done and finish this semester strong has not ben easy but I am doing my best. Here are my tips for finishing that final semester strong no matter how much you don't want to.

Write it Out
I have lists all over with everything I have to do in order of when it is due. This gives me a list with priority so I can get everything done in a timely manner according to due date. Also, constantly bumping into lists showing me everything  have to do helps me to get productive and start crossing things off.

Don't Procrastinate
Though I have a hard time following my own advice, I have been trying harder to get things done early and over a period of time instead of waiting until the last minute. I have always been a notorious procrastinator and especially when trying to finish this last semester with zero motivation I knew I could not leave it all to the end. Therefore, I got some easy papers done early in the semester when I had time and have been picking away at the others in my spare time so I don't have to do them all at once in finals week. I want to enjoy my last few weeks of college and getting things done ahead of time will allow me to do that.

Save Good Classes for the End
I got all my annoying general education and harder major classes out of the way  other semesters so that my very last semester would be filled ith classes I enjoy. I have all History courses and a self-defense class this semester. Though not easy classes, they are subjects I enjoy and therefore I am not struggling through a subject I hate or something that challenges me significantly my final semester. This leaves me the necessary time to prepare for law school, finish wedding prep, find and buy a house and start packing for our move. It also gives me a nice farewell to undergrad with an enjoyable semester of learning.

Keep it Light
I have been making an effort to enjoy my last semester despite the workload. My fiance and I have weekly movie nights, I spend ample time at the barn getting some equine therepy and I am enjoying time with my college friends for the short time we will still be together. It is easy to get bogged down in work and stress and just wanting to be done so making a point to enjoy this time is very important. This is the last few months of college so make the best of them!

College is some of the best years of your life. Don't let the last semester bog down your happiness or your grades. Make some memories, try for a 4.0 and just imagine how sweet it will be when they finally hand you that diploma!

Decisions, Decisions

LAW SCHOOL DECISION MADE!!!!!!

At long last and after a long process full of a lot of stress and heartache, I have chosen to attend a Law School near home where I have an unconditional Full-Tuition scholarship! My fiance has started a wonderful job in the same city and he is really enjoying it. Thankfully, after our marriage this summer, he will be supporting me throughout my 3 years of law school financially so that I do not have to take out loans. I am so relieved to have a decision finally and be able to start preparing for my legal education! It was not easy to choose from the 5 schools I was accepted to but I am very pleased with my final decision.

My decision was largely influenced by 3 factors:
1. My fiance's job location and staying close to our hometown
2. Finances and scholarship
3. Finding the somewhere small where I felt comfortable and that I could be successful

The school I choose is 45 minutes from my hometown and 10 minutes from my fiances new job so it satisfied my location requirement. I will get out 100% debt free thanks to the full tuition scholarship that is unconditional; I simply need to stay in good academic standing and everything is covered including summer classes, externships, etc. Even my second seat deposit was waived. All my hard work in undergrad and on the LSAT sure paid off!!! Lastly, my chosen law school is small and very similar to my undergraduate institution so I feel very comfortable there. My current undergraduate advisor is an Alumni of the law school so I am happy to go to the same school as someone I look up to so much. I also know several 2L's and 3L's at the law school so I have some people to go to when I need advice or help and that is very comforting. Overall, I am so pleased with my decision and excited to become a Rocket next fall!!!!

Now there is a whole new level of stress: we are trying to decide on housing; whether to buy a house or rent for a while. I am so ready to just be moved, married, settled and prepped to start my legal career... but there are some hurdles to jump through first. Needless to say, it is going to be a very busy summer with lots of decisions and changes!

How is your law school decision process going? What factors weighed most heavily on your decision?

What's in My College Backpack?

Today was my busiest day of classes. Thursdays = me being on campus from 11:00am-7:00pm. It is also the week before midterms so tests are coming up and papers are due. For this reason, my backpack is loaded down and prepared for me to spend the day on campus studying my life away. Below you will find my must have lists of what I keep in my backpack, especially on busy days like today.

Electronics
- Computer
- Charger
- Wireless mouse (lifesaver!!)

Books and Notebooks
- Textbooks (obviously)
- A 3 section Notebook: I only need one because I take 99% of my notes on my computer using Microsoft OneNote
- A folder for each class

Random Necessities
- Pens, Highlighters, Pencils: these honestly could be a whole post of their own because I carry a small office store with me at all times for my color coded, OCD notes
- Small bag with cosmetic necessities
- Gum
- Sunglasses
- Hand Cream
- Portable Battery pack
- Phone Charger
- Bullet Journal
- Planner

Food and Such
- Water Bottle
- Coffee Mug
- A snack: Love these little Rev Wraps for on the go lunch or snacking
- My wallet

The whole package!!
Moral of the story: someday I will probably have back problems from lugging this thing around stuffed full of all my things but I have everything I need for a successful day on Campus!

What do you keep in you college backpacks?

Choosing the Right Law School

So you have worked for years on a good undergraduate GPA, you studied yourself nearly to death to get a good LSAT score and you slaved away on an attention-grabbing personal statement for a few months... after dropping a few hundred dollars into the LSAC website, all your applications are turned in and the waiting game begins. You dream of the acceptance that you hope will come flooding in. Maybe they will and maybe they won't; the law school admissions game is ever changing and totally unpredictable. I am here to chime in on the scenario where you have been accepted to multiple schools and have to make the choice of which one you are going to dedicate your next three years of reading, writing and near death.

I was accepted to 5 of the 6 schools I applied to with scholarships to all 5. I had two full-tuition offers and two half-tuition offers. Understandably, the highest ranked school I was accepted to offered the least scholarship. It was very overwhelming to have so many great options but exciting all the same. This is how I made my decision based on the pros and cons of each of the schools I could attend.

Social Media and the Horse Industry: Why the cruelty???

You see it all the time on social media: people bashing western pleasure horses, people bashing people who trail ride instead of showing, Hunter Jumpers sticking up their noses at the western "cowboys" and twitter personalities who gain followers from making fun of random people they may not even know. This is cyber bullying. I get so sick of looking at it day in and day out on social media. Since when did the horse industry become a place of cruelty and cutting absolutely everyone who is a touch different from yourself down from the safety and anonymity of a computer screen?

On the subject of the crazy western pleasure debates all I have to say is everyone has their own opinions and preferences. Just because you do not agree does not give you the right to cut them down and call it cruelty or call the horses "crippled" when they are just doing what they are bred to naturally do. I personally love a good western pleasure horse like no other; however, I want them forward with a natural, level headset and not overcanted; I want them to look like they were born doing this and want to do it. I have a mare that can lope all day long just as slow and simple as could be; it is natural to her and that is a thing of beauty. What bugs me to see the horses SO shut down, TOO low in the neck and loping at a 90 degree angle down the rail and winning that way. I ask that judges take a closer look at the rulebook, what standards the associations have laid out and reward the horses and riders that are riding to that standard. I applaud Jaime Dowdy and Its A Southern Thing for taking a stand at the AQHA World Show and riding off the rail, forward and looking like a rockstar; thank you for taking steps to improve that part of our industry.

On the subject of hating those who ride a different style than yourself; who flipping cares???? We all love the same glorious, four-legged animal that I believe is a gift from God himself. Whether they trail ride, jump, do western pleasure or just stand in a pasture looking pretty, they are all horses and we are all horse lovers. I personally have ridden paints my whole life but find it very fun to get on a Hunter Jumper or Dressage horse every once in a while just for a change of pace. Horses are horses and I find each and every one of them beautiful and magical because I just love horses. Respect everyone no matter what discipline or style because it is their choice and what they enjoy and there is nothing wrong with that.

On the belief that AQHA horses are far superior to APHA horses I have one statement: APHA horses are cropout AQHA horses that were born with too much white. When they could not be shown AQHA, they formed their own association for the cropout horses with too much white, APHA. Therefore paints=quarter horses from the basis and the lineage. They are the same horses, just different hair and skin patterns.

My last and biggest pet peeve is the Equine Twitter "anons" and all others who hide behind a keyboard and bash people for fun without knowing them. As for the twitter accounts, these are young, generally high school/college age girls who make an Equine twitter account anonymously and use it as a platform to air their views, make fun of people and their horses and spew opinions that can often be hurtful to others. As a victim of this very intense form of bullying, I find it disgraceful and disgusting. I had people hiding behind a keyboard telling me that because I chose to leave my geldings mane long and be different I should go "jump off a cliff" to quote their exact verbiage in a tweet (and this was tweeted by someone I considered a friend until that point). What is the purpose of this??? What good is this doing other than building up some pathetic people's self-esteem??? I just don't understand the need to sit around and bash people just for some laughs. Something else I saw regularly was taking pictures off peoples social media account without permission and posting them around and making fun of any number of things: outfits that weren't deemed stylish enough, Equitation that wasn't perfect, a horse that was still a bit furry.... what if those kids could only afford that out of date outfit and had paid for it with their own hard earned money and were proud as punch? Why tear that down? What if that girl has a leg injury that prevents her heels from going any lower but she loves to show the class regardless? What if that is an older gelding with Cushings that is teaching someone the ropes and hasn't been body clipped yet? What is so wrong with all of these scenarios that gives you the right to tear these people down? The answer is nothing. All it does is hurt innocent people's feelings and drive people away from the horse industry. (I will say that not all can be judged by the actions of a few and not everyone on twitter is a part of what I described and many are perfectly nice and build people up instead of tearing them down. Sadly in my experience these lovely people were the minority.)

I will get down off my soapbox now. I just can't stand to sit here and watch social media be used as a vehicle for cruelty and cyber bullying inside this relatively close-knit horse industry. We are all bound together by one common bond: a love for all things equine. We can either join together and be a big family who supports and respects one another; as most of my equine "family" and friends are. This is the situation where social media is used as a tool to keep in touch with friends from other states, share photos and stories about our precious ponies, to sell horses and tack, exchange ideas, educate and keep up with all the news; in that form, social media is amazing and a wonderful addition to the horse industry. I much prefer this use of social media to the unnecessary bashing cruelty that happens all too often. All I have to ask those pathetic people is why? What good is this doing? What is the purpose? All this does is make you feel bigger and better than others and that is not good enough reason to cut people down through a computer. It does NO GOOD. Instead of sitting around on a computer bashing people and talking big; get your booty out to the barn and put in some blood, sweat and tears so that your showing and riding does the talking and you won't have to hide behind a computer screen and cut other people down to make yourself feel cooler and better. If you do your homework and leave it all out in the arena, chances are your results will make you feel so good that you won't need to bash others in order to make yourself feel cool.

Let's remember that we are all together for a common reason and that is we love horses.... is it too much to ask to treat each other with respect and common courtesy over the internet and not purposefully harm each other?
